Chapter Eleven

“I’m getting married.” Venu’s fingers halted their rapid tapping on the keyboard as Akash’s words sunk into him. “Next week.”

He slouched back into his revolving chair with an insolent smile. If he was surprised, he certainly didn’t show it. Maybe he wasn’t. “That was fast! From katti katti to kissie kissie, huh!” He wriggled his eyebrows.

Akash gave him a dirty look. “Looks like your advancing age has started to affect your hearing. I’m talking about marriage. Not kissie kissie.”

“I can hear just fine. But tell me there was absolutely no kissie kissie involved during the proposal and I’ll eat my indispensable phone.”

A slash of red streaked through Akash’s cheeks making Venu burst out into a loud guffaw. It only incensed Akash some more. “Will you shut up and listen to me?”

“Sure. Go ahead. I won’t even say I told you so.”

“I told you so? For what?” Although Akash had a pretty good idea for what. The impertinent bastard was going to rub his face in his I told you sos.

Venu continued as if he didn’t hear the question. “And you didn’t just fall! You’ve drowned, submerged, immersed, sunk..”

“I don’t think you have any more synonyms left. And if you’re done with your juvenile performance, there really is something that I want to tell.” Venu switched the phone to silent mode and waited. Akash exhaled and his expression turned slightly grim. “My parents met her in-laws and it went well. All four of them went and spoke to the pandit. Wedding date has been finalized for next Wednesday.”

“Ten days from now. Good. Great in fact. I don’t have to see both of you exchanging soulful looks in the office for long. So, what’s got your shorts in a knot?”

“I already had a grand wedding with all the hoopla once Venu. Really don’t have the stomach to digest it again.”

“Do a court marriage then. I know someone there. No need for that one month waiting period and all that nonsense.”

Akash shook his head. “Megha had that. She said anything is OK with her. But..”

“But this King of all he surveys wants to lay the world at his Queen’s feet.”

“Yes. Yes I do.” He didn’t make any excuses. That was what he wanted. He didn’t pretend to know a woman’s mind but didn’t girls generally dream of grand weddings? An elaborate venue where her groom would proudly introduce her as his? His parents also hadn’t been too enthusiastic about it, one of the main reasons being that they didn’t want to add financial pressure on her family. And he agreed. But still..

“So decision pending on that?”

Venu’s question wrenched him out of his thoughts. “No. Everyone finally agreed for a marriage at the Vishnu temple in airport road.”

“And that’s still bothering you? Not giving her a proper wedding?”

Akash got up and walked towards the floor to ceiling windows that surrounded all the three sides of Venu’s cabin. His silence was answer enough. “Well, there is one way out.” He turned his head expectantly. Venu always had a way out.
